Born into a family already inside the national movement
Sukhdev Thapar was born on 15 May 1907 in Ludhiana, in the Punjab province of British India, to Ramlal Thapar and Ralli Devi. It is widely recorded that his father died while Sukhdev was very young and that he grew up substantially in the household of his uncle, Lala Achint Ram — a nationalist worker who would later sit in the Constituent Assembly of India and in the Lok Sabha.
Disputed / uncertain Accounts differ on precisely when his father died. The substance — that Sukhdev was raised in a politically active household — is not in dispute.
